Anti-Bleeding Drug, Trasylol, Found to be Cause of Death in Two Major Studies

Two major studies of Trasylol, manufactured by Bayer, prove that the anti-bleeding drug causes serious adverse side-effects in patients. The studies show that patients who are given Trasylol have a higher risk of serious illness and fatality.

The link was solidified during a third drug study in Canada when patients began to die during the study. The study was halted and Bayer stopped selling Trasylol. Prior to the study, Trasylol had been available and readily used for 14 years.

Trasylol is commonly used to help patients during heart bi-pass surgery. The drug is administered in the operating room in order to prevent bleeding during the surgery.

Both studies discovered that Trasylol increases the risk of death.

The first study was conducted on 10,000 people undergoing heart bi-pass surgery between 1996 and 2005. Of the patients who received Trasylol during surgery, 6.4 percent died within 30 days. 16 percent of patients died within one year of being administered Trasylol.

When the researchers compared the results of the patients who were given Trasylol to the patients that were given different prescriptions, they found that the risk of death was 2.5 percent higher in the patients who received Trasylol.

The second study was funded by Bayer. It was conducted on about 78,000 people between 2003 and 2006. Bayer’s own study found that the risk of death from Trasylol was actually 64 percent higher than other prescription anti-bleeding drugs.

Both of the above studies were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found during a meeting with Bayer to investigate the adverse effects of Trasylol that at least 2,000 people die every year from Trasylol side-effects.

During the meeting, Bayer did not disclose the results of their study to the FDA panel. They claimed that the results were still preliminary and therefore, not relevant.

The studies demonstrate direct evidence that Trasylol raises the risk of death. Trasylol may be responsible for estimates as high as thousands of deaths every month that the drug was in use. Trasylol attorneys are currently working on establishing claims against Bayer.
